First Look: "Riddick: Dark Fury"

Posted: Wednesday April 21st, 2004 11:52pm (Au-EST)
Author: Garth Franklin

From renowned animator Peter Chung ("The Animatrix") comes "The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury", an all-new vision of the Riddick universe. When Riddick is captured by bounty hunters, he must battle soldiers of fortune and vicious creatures in the lethal slaughter cells of a massive starship.

Riddick's night vision and ruthless combat skills are all that stand between him and a fate literally worse than death in this animated sci-fi DVD release that bridges the stories of "Pitch Black" and "The Chronicles of Riddick". Today is a first and exclusive look at some artwork from the release due out in stores June 15th:

I have no idea how the final product(s) will actually turn out, but I like the peripheral materials being generated for Universal's sci-fi tentpole The Chronicles of Riddick, the sequel to the minor hit Pitch Black.

The week after the film hits screens, you can get a little more backstory on Vin Diesel's nocturnal asskicker thanks to the animated DVD Dark Fury, which bridges the gap between Pitch and Riddick (though why they're not release it the week before seems a bit queer). The story, from Aeon Flux creator Peter Chung, follows Riddick and the two Pitch Black survivors as they confront bounty hunters, soldiers and alien creatures in deep space. I knew they'd planned to make two Riddick movies simultaneously, but I didn't know this was what they meant...

The upcoming Riddick Vivendi Universal videogame, also set to coincide with the film's June release, is also shaping up nicely. Subtitled Escape from Butcher Bay, the prequel game (which Diesel is also co-producing) follows Riddick's prison time in the maximum security "Slam" and details how he acquired his night vision. Vin Diesel lends his marble-mouthed vocals to both the game and the animated film.

I'd expect a comic book series to hit shelves around the same time as well. And maybe a nice Riddick tea set. Considering I'm hearing the film's budget has already soared past $200 million (and the growing possibility of Van Helsing being an immense disappointment), I suppose Universal is tossing all their eggs into the Diesel-powered bucket.

Unfortunately, there weren't anymore details beyond this available, but as with the Van Helsing animated DTV release, Chronicles of Riddick is obviously getting the same treatment. However, with the involvement of Peter Chung, this title takes on a slightly higher level of notoriety among animation fans. Of course, that can be a good or bad thing depending on whether or not you like Peter Chung. Fans tend to either love his work, or hate it because of his style.
